I Do Not Seek It Out

Preoccupied with death or death is preoccupied with me.  I haven’t sought it out.  “Time of Death,” a documentary series that allows us to step into rooms where people are dying.  At first, we see them early in their journey, then the movement through what’s called “active death.”  Great suffering.  The body gasping for breath that will not come.

I always say I would prefer to die in my sleep.  Just as we would all prefer to have no hardships in life.  As if confiding it would make it so.  I understand now.  Death is generally not that lovely, quiet slipping away we all hope it will be.  The body has its own imperative–to live.  The body resists death and, in resisting, creates suffering.

Another televised death series, then articles in magazines assert themselves.  I do not seek them out.  In Journey to Ixtlan, Castaneda quotes Don Juan as saying, “Death is our eternal companion, it is always to our left, at an arm’s length..”  When I first encountered that quote, I was 20.  At 60, death may be a little closer than arm’s length.

The universe is not sending me a message.  I have the opportunity to learn more; knowledge always makes itself known.
